AP1/ Fall 2022
Objective
Read Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime and pick an excerpt that connects with a secondary narrative. I chose Kendrick Lamar’s Institutionalized because it relates to Trevor Noah’s own experience throughout the book on the subject of hustle culture and the cycle of poverty. Then, using components from my custom typeface (See here), design a classical-style book focused on images, hierarchy, and composition. The design should integrate both sets of content. When the book is completed, create a digital/interactive version - link below.
Notes
While I continued using cassette tape imagery from my custom typeface project, I also added supporting images to compliment the overall thematic of musical devices and money, both of which relate to the content within Trevor Noah’s excerpts. I choose to use black and white for a more dramatic effect and not let color compete for attention. This project allowed me to experiment with type that helps support a dramatic narrative structure on both a micro and macro level.
