Griot Museum of Black History Rebrand
GD3/ Fall 2021
Objective
Create a new brand identity for a selected existing museum. Elements of the new brand identity will include a logo, a broster (brochure + poster), wayfinder, website, and instagram post. Once these have been designed, craft a design guidebook displaying all of the elements.
Notes
For my museum rebrand, I was assigned the Griot Museum of Black History. I began this project by doing research on the museum, which entailed visiting the museum and studying the already established brand on their website. This allowed me to formulate a design plan that also kept essential elements of the museum in mind. Before creating designs for this project, I was met with the question of what audience I was trying to reach with my design. I wanted to focus on a younger demographic ranging from adolescents to young adults. In order to do this, I focused on creating designs that were more energetic and colorful.
Logo
Early Logo Ideas
Early designs of the Griot logo just featured a stylized "G". Toward the end I gravitated toward a "G" composed of multiple lines. This was inspired by typefaces used in black media toward within the 1960s-1980s.
Broster
Broster: Early Ideas/ Designs
For this portion of the design, I was really inspired by collages. In order to reflect this, I collected various images centered around black joy, celebration, and art. Below are different iterations of overlays and collages I created to help get an idea of how I wanted my booster design to look.
Wayfinder
With the way finder, the main idea was to create something that fit with the logo I already created. I made sure to stick with the same yellow color shown in the "G" logo. Here, I Also experimented with different vibrant colors.
Website
The website was the continuation of the previous design techniques (images, backgrounds, vibrant colors, etc.). The website can be viewed through this link https://djbills2001d118.myportfolio.com
Instagram GIF
For the instagram design and gif, I ended up taking images and putting color overlays on them to continue the style demonstrated in the brochure collages presented above.
Guide Book
The guide book is the culmination of all the design elements I created for this project. The book displays all design elements and serves as a guide to how design elements should be used for this brand.
